At some point in Sam's career in the Marines, his identity is killed off and becomes Jack.Jack is function of a highly specialized group who brings downwards terrorist and sex activity traffickers. When he gets assigned to his newest mission, he finds out his first and merely love, Sophia works for the human they need to investigate. When her life becomes endangered, Jack learns he volition do anything to keep her safe.
This was probably 75% Suspense and 25% romance merely information technology'due south really practiced suspense. Despite the long separation, Jack is still very much in honey with Sophia and he'due south extremely protective of her. It's exactly what I dearest to see in my reads.
I borrowed this on the Audible Romance Package and enjoyed this narrator. I would recommend the audiobook.

Let's kickoff with the hero, a Marine sniper, who is recruited by the NSA for a new Black Ops team. 1 of the conditions of joining said squad is changing his name and having plastic surgery. Huh?
one. Why alter his name? Isn't he supposed to be doing hush-hush piece of work and/or Black Ops job? When undercover, you plainly give a false proper name and when doing Black Ops, nobody asks your proper name.
2. Why plastic surgery? This is a man who grew up in the foster system and so he has no family or friends, except for an quondam girlfriend. In the places he's going, nobody'south going to know who he is.
As this doesn't make sense operationally, the reason for these changes is and so that the old girlfriend wouldn't recognize him when he came back to her life. This is i of those couples who supposedly loved each other forever and ever but something bad happened and they went their separate ways and never tried to contact the other. Huh? If the hero loved her so much, wouldn't it have made sense to give her some infinite for a year or and then and so attain out to her? Just no. The hero went on his merry fashion and when offered the chance to get a new identity, he accustomed without compunction.
The whole suspense plot doesn't make any sense either. The heroine gets proof of gun smuggling in her job. The bad guys have no security whatsoever so she'south able to get in and out. And even though they know she was in there (they saw her motorcar license'due south plates), they wait until the next day to exercise something, in the most elaborate way possible. Why not become to her business firm that same dark and kill her?
The bad guys, knowing that their operation has been compromised, exercise nil whatsoever to even motility to a unlike hangar. Instead, they waste product time chasing the heroine and trying to kill her. Why not set her upward to take the blame for some crime? Peradventure dump a body in her firm and accuse her of being a murderer/pornographer/you name it?
And yous won't believe the reason why the bad guy needed to step foot in Miami, to exist snatched upwards conveniently past the government. To get a guy to sign some papers! Why couldn't he transport 1 of his goons with the papers and then accept them delivered to him where he was rubber?
I won't even go into the relationship between the characters, which was totally apathetic. I didn't feel any chemistry whatsoever.
Sophie Eastlake did a skilful job with the narration but even she couldn't salvage this. Definitely not continuing the series and not reading this author once more.
...moreI felt similar many situations could accept been resolved easily simply with a tad of communication, and the twists could have been better. The setting and globe edifice provided enough material for something more interesting and less cliché or predictable imo (NSA agents, cloak-and-dagger agents, Miami, druglords, etc. Exciting stuff).

Non impressive, but not really bad either. I liked it ok...I felt like many situations could accept been resolved easily simply with a tad of communication, and the twists could have been improve. The setting and world building provided enough fabric for something more interesting and less platitude or predictable imo (NSA agents, hugger-mugger agents, Miami, druglords, etc. Heady stuff).
I liked the audiobook narrator, I've listened to her works before, her voice flows nicely and she has great voices and tones for every character, even the male ones.
Nice audiobook to listen to while I'g busy around the house, running errands or multitasking. It'southward action packed and has a fast paced, Idiot box show/movie feel to information technology. :)

I won this ARC here on Goodreads so thank you GR!4.five I could tell right away that this is a series that I will dear to sink my teeth into. This is a first in a new serial that is RS. I cant give cant give any spoilers and wont be doing whatever quotes since this doesn't come out until October.
Sometime Marine sniper and current NSA agent Jack Stone works for Wesley Burkhart -boss, handler and recruit all rolled into 1. Jack has been called in to work hugger-mugger as a silent partner with Keane Flights to infiltrate the workings of SBMS (South Beach Medical Supplies). Wesley Burkhart wants Jack to go close to Sophie Moreno because she is the assistant to Roland Weller. They are unclear if Weller for working with terrorists and Jack needs to get close to Sophie.
At that place is a lot going on in this book. It starts off with a bang. You lot are drawn in right abroad. There is then much more than going on with Jack and I wish I could say more than just nope. I volition say that this was pretty much nonstop action. When in that location was downwardly time you commonly got flashbacks. Which I enjoyed.
Aside from all the action at that place is an instant attraction that is HOT! I loved Jack and Sophie together. Jack made me swoon! His thoughts near Sophie has me melting and I wish I could spout out his sinfully sweet thoughts. Sophie was a good character also. I didn't discover her annoying in fact I kinda thought that she was stubborn and funny at times. Maybe that was just me though.
In that location were side characters , well okay at that place was one that I am dying to learn more near! The manner information technology was written I really hope that means there is a hereafter volume for that character. There is a great climax scene at the end but I was a little disappointed that in that location wasn't an update on someone who was majorly involved in all that went down. And I was wondering most the end scene in epilog. Was that a filler or what? Almost made me think something was about to happen. I wish there was a little something more about Jack and Sophie because the epilog felt like it was cut short. Of class I have the uncorrected version so maybe that will be different in the afterwards event. Overall I loved it and look forward to more from this series.
...moreAudio very well read by Sophie Westlake....Fast paced and and kept my involvement from first to finish.

Jack, a man who "killed" his truthful self Sam when he went to piece of work for a special ops squad left backside the woman he loved when they were teens living in the same foster dwelling house, Sophie. He hadn't seen her for years but always loved her and when his new mission puts him in direct contact with Sophie, he can't say no and goes undercover for the op that brings him face to face with the only woman he's always loved, and she has no idea who he truly is.
Sophie and Sam were in beloved, he was her first lover and her protector confronting the world. But when Sam enlists and leaves Sophie in a new foster domicile for one month before she tin become out on her own, she's attacked and raped by her foster father. She's total of hurt and hurting and takes it out on Sam, maxim some nasty to things to him during their last conversation and it's the final time they've seen each other until now. Sophie suspects her dominate and their company is wrapped up in some shady dealings and at present she has proof. She also put herself right in the centre of a dangerous functioning and not only is her life on the line, just the lives of her friends and anyone else that can be used every bit leverage confronting her. Sam, or Jack every bit he goes by at present, realizes how much trouble Sophie is in and while his mission is yet to bring down the bad guys who are dealing in artillery smuggling using Sophie'south visitor as a cover, he's too protecting Sophie with his life.
I was actually enjoying this story up until the finish, more on that later. I liked the Sam/Jack storyline and while it got dragged out a fiddling as well long earlier he reveals himself to Sophie, I enjoyed their romance. It's whirlwind, Sophie falling for Jack who's really the swain she used to dearest. So in that respect, it'southward not besides fast, but Sophie's in the dark for much of the story fifty-fifty though she has her suspicions. The rest between seeing Sophie and Jack fall for each other mixed in with flashbacks to Sophie and Sam'south relationship was a prissy counter.
The story had me hooked, information technology HAD me, upward until the end. Sophie and Jack's relationship felt solid. Yes it was fast, but both were in the same space with their feelings until Sophie gets taken and used as a bargaining flake confronting Jack. Jack doesn't desire to bear witness his hand to the bad guy so he downplays his feelings towards Sophie so he tin get his plan into action. Sophie's convinced that Jack is merely using her, that he doesn't love her and she's only a means to an finish for him to consummate his mission. Ok, whaaaat? It felt similar this came out of left field because Sophie was effectually Jack when he did this same matter with people coming in and out of the story, playing off what he really planned to do past saying 1 thing and doing another. Yet here'due south Sophie, being held and in tears because she means nil to him. I hated that this was done to this character because up until this bespeak, I was enjoying Sophie, but this put her in the stupid-heroine category fast for me and ruined what had been an engaging story.
I'll probably come back for the next volume, especially if it centers effectually Jack's friend Levi who makes an appearance and what we larn almost his tragic past has me interested in his story. Targeted had an interesting plot gear up for Jack and his back story, a nice romance just the ending left a bitter taste in my mouth.

This one was non for me. Information technology took me three days to stop it, a actually long time for me. I plant it easy to put downwardly the volume, and so much that I finished three other books while in the centre of this one. I just couldn't observe much that was good in this book.I did enjoy the fact that Sam and Sophie cherished the memories of each other, simply the continuous flashback got a bit one-time. I didn't get why Sam didn't try to contact Sophie once again, if she had meant that much to him, even though it made it easier for him to turn into Jack.
I had a difficult time buying that Jack's boss would send him dorsum to piece of work with Sophie, his commencement dearest, all for the sake of closure. I also had a hard time buying into all the reckless actions that Jack did, barely checking in with his dominate and fifty-fifty going against his orders. Why was there no reprimands?!
The author's not a bad author, her sentences were coherent and put together well, merely the characters came off equally very flat for me. by the terminate of the volume, I felt like I even so knew almost nothing about Jack or Sophie other than basic groundwork, and I was incredulous that Sophie simply appears to have two friends and no life other than work and dwelling. Jack, similarly seemed to have no other interests besides his love for Sophie and his work. All in all, didn't get in like shooting fish in a barrel for me to connect to them every bit characters.
The ending was very implausible. It doesn't seem like it would be that piece of cake for someone would exist able to get out of that life as easily as Jack did.
After all that, I don't think I'll exist standing on with the series.

Action packed from the first. This is i of the improve volume one romantic suspense books I've read in a while. I enjoyed this i.Former marine Jack Rock is the second in command in the NSA team that specializes in hush-hush piece of work taking out crime rings. Now Jack has been tasked with discovering whose leaking information to the Miami drug lord and working with Keane Flights to smuggle drugs and arms. This new assignment forced Jack to work with Sophie Moreno, a sometime flame who believed him expressionless on assignment in Afghanistan.
Sophie came through the foster intendance system trusting very few people and still nursing the devastation of losing her beloved Sam when the new agent Jack comes on the scene. So many things almost Jack remind Sophie of Sam but she knows that Sam is dead. Can she let go of Sam and move frontward with Jack?
I liked this story and enjoyed the unraveling of the mystery. At that place was action, adventure, mystery, beloved and most of all, forgiveness. The author did a corking job in keeping the footstep steady. It was never boring or slow. I was rooting for the couple the whole fourth dimension and enjoyed the angst filled ride. Sophie Eastlake is one of my favorite narrators considering she does a not bad chore differentiating voices. Her recitation kept me engaged to the story from first to the finish. I can't look for volume 2.

...moreThis was a really skilful story. Lots of action, running for your life, kidnapping, killing, espionage and romance.

Sophie and Jack had nifty chemistry together. It was non forced or false it really felt 18-carat. There was one sexual practice scene that was very mildly (nicely) written, so no hot and steamy sex but the chemistry, attraction and sexual tension was definitely all there.
The story line, plot and the back story was groovy. There were no TSTL moments by the heroine which was a bonus. I really hate information technology when the heroine has to do something really stupid, this did non occur so, YAY!
I would take liked more dialogue, what there was of it was skillful, but I would accept liked a lot more.
Equally for the narration, I think Sophie Eastlake did a very adept job. She read with emotion and did a pretty good chore on the men'due south voices and gave everyone their own singled-out voice. So it was a solid 4 star listen.
I am going to listen to the next book in the series Bound to Danger, Deadly Ops Book ii.
This was worth the audible credit for sure.

Oh human, what a bloody brilliant read. Once I started I could not put it downward, I was even reading whilst cooking! A story chock full of action packed suspense with two vivid characters. While I didn't fall in love with Sophie Eastlake the commencement I heard her characterize another book I thought I'd give her another get. Sophie does a good job with Targeted. Her voice for the characters was strong, her pacing and emotions of the characters. I'll heed to more of Sophie in the future.
Soap opera plastic surgery trope
I've seen this during my lather opera watching days but Targeted is the kickoff book I've read/heed to that uses this plot device to hibernate the identity of the hero from the heroine. I thought, "Oh she'south [Sophie] going to be pissed/hurt when she finds out." Sam aka Jack Stone (total soap opera name LOL) left Sophie when they were teens to join the Marines
Sam aka Jack Rock (total soap opera proper noun LOL) left Sophie when they were teens to join the Marines. Well, Sam didn't exactly left her, he went to boot camp only something happened to Sophie while he away and she blamed him because he wasn't there to protect her and she didn't want to see him again. Now xiii years later, Jack is in Sophia's life under embrace with the NSA.
Onward and Upwardly
Even though Targeted wasn't my favorite in the series I'thou glad that I backtrack to listen to it, I can at present move on to the next ii books on my shelf in the serial, Edge of Danger (#4) and A Covert Affair (#v). So look out for those reviews later on this month.

Katie Reus doesn't put her characters in a situation that she can't write them through. Her plot was skilful just there were too many sex-on-the-encephalon interruptions.
A niggling less on the folio fillers and I could crash-land this up a star. I heard books farther along in the serial are better. I'll take to give them a effort.

I have noticed that I either love or hate Katie's heroines. There is no middle ground for me in this department. Sophie is one of those heroines that did admittedly nothing for me. I hated that she worked that mode for me. She was put through some tough situations. There was so much potential for her to be one of those heroines that shined for me, merely she only never made it happen. Don't read me wrong here. Sophie is not weak, whiney, or flakey. Some of her reactions were just off to me. Considering her character never lost it while in her numerous stressful situations says a lot. The times she did lose it was completely mind boggling.
I'grand pretty sure the side by side hero, next volume was set in the pages of Targeted. I'chiliad curious. I volition definitely be keeping an middle out for the Next Mortiferous Ops book. I practise love a character that will do bad things for completely selfish reasons. If the next book goes where I retrieve it might I will get just that. Characters that walk the line of team expert and team bad always have amazing tales.

Sometimes impulse buys pay off, and this book is 1 of them.
Well-written, well-paced, great label (the hero was merely so 'wow', and though the heroine turned a bit annoying toward the end, I'1000 glad she wasn't whiny and swoony in the heart of all the activeness), wonderful action, adept intrigue, nice romance...What more tin can I enquire from a romantic suspense novel?
I peculiarly liked the new identity/new face ploy. And the fact she (or her subconscious) recognized him. Awww. Be still my romantic heart.
I'one thousand looking forrard to the next books in this series, hoping Jack'due south friend Levi gets his own story. And yep I think, Wesley Burkhart, the big bad boss, deserves his own book too.

Jack and Sophie thrust back together in Targeted. Jack is enlightened of their past together, just Sophie is non. Jack has been given a new face and identity due to his job with the NSA.Concrete characters of descriptions randomly appear throughout the story. For example, Wesley's current physical clarification isn't given until the 3rd quarter to epilogue of the book. Until then I'd been picturing a 40ish, medium tiptop, single human being only to find he'south tall, older and had a family. Some characters seem to disappear near the end/resolution also as it'south never reveled what happened to them.
Despite this, the flashbacks and story'southward current action flow together well. The writing is well-baked, detailed and activeness packed. The characters are realistic. Both Jack and Sophie share their points of view and are strong willed personalities.
Overall, a fun activeness packed read.

Jack is chosen in. To go close to Sophie, his dominate orders, and find out what she knows. It seems she knows a little too much since someone is taking shots at her...
To cleanse my reading palate, so to speak, I decided to re-read this starting time volume and actually end the serial.
Stories involving heavy spy lingo tend to go either way, this ane was one of the skilful ones and the whole spy lingo/tech stuff didn't make me want to bang my head against the wall or my optics go all burnished.
The story was well-paced, the plot was tight and the characters multi-dimensional. I particularly liked the fact the heroine, despite not having a constabulary enforcement groundwork, wasn't but a damsel in distress, screaming and crying throughout the story, but was an active and welcome participant.
The romance could've come up across as rushed, if it weren't for the fact the two knew each other from before, though the heroine only suspected it, since he was a new identity and a completely new face, yet her hidden recognized him. Ohhh...
The activeness was tightly-packed and intense, the spy plot engrossing and intriguing with multiple twists and turns. What more can one ask from a romantic suspense novel?
I'm sure the few loose ends left by the story will exist picked upwardly in the following books and I'grand looking forrard to Jack's friend'south Levi'south story, hoping he either gets his revenge or a 2d chance...Or perchance both.
...more thanTargeted is about NSA amanuensis Jack Stone and Sophie Moreno. Jack (although he went by a different name at the time) and Sophie were very shut when they were in high schoolhouse. Thursday
I've mentioned before that I enjoy Katie Reus's romantic suspense novels. Her Red Stone Security series is my favorite, but I have been enjoying her Deadly Ops serial lately. Then I decided to give Targeted, the offset book in the Deadly Ops, series a try. While I am glad I read Targeted, I wasn't completely sold on this novel.Targeted is virtually NSA agent Jack Stone and Sophie Moreno. Jack (although he went past a dissimilar name at the time) and Sophie were very close when they were in high school. They were a couple, just ended upward splitting upward. Jack signed upwardly for the armed services, and they lost bear on. And then Jack was recruited for the NSA, and literally given a new face and a new identity, and Sophie was notified that Jack was dead. Years later, Jack is assigned to a case that involves Sophie's employer. When he sees Sophie once again he is still super into her, and Sophie is into Jack, but she doesn't realize that he was her former fellow. And then in that location is danger, and trying to solve the mystery and of form they fall for each other.
Okay, so in that location was a lot I liked about Targeted. I really liked both Sophie and Jack. They are both good people that I could root for. Jack was really swoony, super skillful looking and knows how to handle himself in a dangerous situation. Jack is still and then in love with Sophie, even after all these years, but he'southward staying away because he thinks that is what she wants. Sophie is a heroine I can get behind. She wants to do the correct thing when she discovers her dominate may exist up to something fishy. She'southward too confused because whenever she'southward effectually Jack, she is reminded of her erstwhile fellow (whom she believes is dead), and she doesn't know how to feel almost that.
I was definitely here for Jack and Sophie'southward romance. They have chemistry, simply their connection is about more than than but concrete attraction. Targeted is besides very fast-paced with lots of action. That said, sometimes the story got bogged down with fourth dimension spent with the baddies. I likewise idea that some of the storylines were left unfinished, which was a bit disappointing.
My biggest issue, though, was all about this "new face" that Jack has. It really fabricated no sense whatsoever for Jack to accept a new confront. He is the only one in his secret section of the NSA, and it was really just a plot device to add conflict to the romance. It was really lightheaded, and I could never completely forget almost information technology.
All the same, Targeted past Katie Reus was a fun read. It certainly wasn't perfect, but it was enjoyable. If you like romantic suspense, with a swoony hero, look into this one. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook
...moreJack was my favorite of the ii characters. He's a sometime marine sniper, but with his new face and identity he had to go out that behind. The onetime him, Sam Kelly, is at present dead and Jack at present works for NSA, a hugger-mugger co-operative of the government. Jack was awesome! He was bad ass and all that former military machine training really showed. With his new consignment, he is reconnected with a person from his past, Sophie. Sophie, on the other mitt, I found to be very annoying. she wasn't weak or the 'damsel in distress', but she did need protecting. I constitute that she wanted to catch an attitude or be defiant at the nearly dangerous of times. Why are y'all arguing when he's trying to protect you? People are shooting and you want to concur a conversation? No ma'am!
But even though I found Sophie to exist a little bit annoying, I did relish the romance between them. Sophie and Jack (Sam) dated every bit teenagers and haven't seen each other since. Sophie believes Sam to be dead because he supposedly died in a road side bomb in Afghanistan. She keeps seeing all the similarities that Jack had to Sam and keeps trying to effigy information technology out, but Jack couldn't just come out and say 'I'k actually Sam' because he's hugger-mugger. I found the whole thing to exist interesting and I like how they didn't only jump into a relationship. You could feel the allure between the two and yous could see the feelings that the two were trying to contain, but it didn't get forced on you in the beginning. I find that a lot of books I read when the two characters already know each other or take dated in the past, the romance gets thrown on you actually fast. But yeah, overall, the book was pretty expert and I'd definitely like to see what the side by side installment volition be about.

Targeted is the starting time volume in the new Mortiferous Ops series by Katie Reus. To me, this is what romantic suspense is all most. Good guys (NSA agents) tracking down the bad guys (drug lords and terrorists). Proficient versus evil. A hero that volition practice anything to protect the heroine. A heroine that won't listen when the hero says to get out him backside. Targeted is engaging and full of suspense from beginning to terminate. The love story in Targeted is very unique and emotionally raw all on its ain. Information technology is really difficult to talk nearly it much without revealing any spoilers. Jack and Sophie knew each other as teens and fell in love. They went their divide ways and at present Jack is dorsum in her life working undercover, but after some facial reconstruction then Sophie doesn't know who he is right away. Even so, Sophie is drawn to Jack in a way she was but drawn to one other homo she knew in her life equally a teenager - him. Watching their relationship unfold while the 2 of them are on the run from a drug lord is intense.
Katie does a wonderful job keeping it real in Targeted. The choices and responses are very advisable for Sophie and Jack while they are running for their lives and being shot at in public. Sophie is freaked out equally virtually people would exist and Jack does what he can to protect her just also doesn't saccharide coat anything and makes smart decisions. Katie also keeps it real with the romance. You can see and feel the chemistry betwixt Sophie and Jack without all the sexual activity scenes. They don't have fourth dimension with all the moving around they take to do to stay a footstep ahead of the bad guys anyhow! The main intimate scene that is in the book is not overly detailed, very well written and satisfying to the reader. The balance of romance and suspense is perfect for the story.
I enjoyed the flashbacks to Sophie and Jack'south by which aid tell their story and how they got to nowadays day. It is a neat fashion to feel their human relationship from the beginning. I am intrigued past Levi's plot and wonder if he volition be in the next volume. I really had a hard time putting Targeted downward because at that place was and so much suspense going on. I felt like I couldn't exit the characters and had to brand certain everything turned out okay before I could breathe piece of cake. If you are looking for a romantic suspense that really pulls you into the story and makes you experience what the characters experience, I recommend you effort Targeted.
