You are about to learn how to draw spider. Among many other species of insects, I would say, a spider is maybe one of the simplest when it comes to drawing.
Generally, spiders shave a small head, a big belly, and 8 legs. Did you know that there are more than 45 thousand registered spider species?
Learn How to Draw Spider
I picked up this most common type of spider for its simple shape. This is probably the best example to learn how to draw a spider.
Basically, what you need to be careful when you draw spider is the entire proportional balance. This regards especially the length of the spider's legs.
Always observe the picture well before you begin to draw. For instance, observe how big is spider's belly comparing to the length of the legs.
You will learn how to draw your spider perfectly by following the steps in this tutorial.
Sketch a vertical line in the middle of the paper and sketch an egg-like ellipse shape. This will be the spider's head where you later attach the legs.
Outline the belly and add the forehead part on the spider's head as it you see in this picture.
On each side of the spider's head sketch all eight root parts of the spider's legs. Four on the left side and four on the right side. You can outline them evenly on both sides. Sketch the palps.
Mark each leg by sketching a single line indicating the direction of the legs.
Sketch out the rest of each leg as you see in this picture. It is OK to outline only approximate direction for each leg, you do not need any exactness now.
Make sure that each leg consists of 3 parts.
The basic outline sketch is almost ready. In only 5 steps! You've learned how to draw spider, at least its basic rough sketch.
Now let's flesh out each leg. First, sketch the part of the spider's legs that are attached to the body.
Sketch out the middle part on each leg. Be careful about the thickness of each leg. If possible make them about the same or similar thickness.
Sketch the outer parts of the legs and the palps. Add a claw on the top of each leg.
Erase all unnecessary pencil guide lines. By a well sharpened pencil draw a clean and distinct contour line all over spider's body.
Add eight small eyes on its head. On spider's butt, add a so called Spinnerets, a silk gland where spider throws the silk thread.
You have a complete clean contour drawing now. A perfect base for coloring page.
Begin shading the spider's legs. There is no right or wrong here. Just make it as you see in this picture.
Sketch four lines, a pattern along the spider's body typical for this type.
Keep on shading by adding more short hair on the spider's legs and body.
You've just learned how to draw spider. Now you have a simple pencil drawing. You practiced diligently. Congratulations!
